    About the Range

A pure expression of our site and the season.

    The Season

Higher than average winter rains in 2014 set the tone for a benchmark Yarra Valley vintage in 2015. The defining feature was the mild and dry spring, allowing for excellent conditions for flowering and fruit set. The balanced crop was then allowed to ripen under optimum summer conditions, again mild and dry, but with rain at the right times. In fact the only significant rain was 55mm on Friday February 13th, of course. More than enough to freshen the canopy and settle the dust on our free-draining slopes. Grapes were handpicked without haste, when the fruit flavours were vibrant and expressive and the acids and sugars in balance. Above all the wines show great purity, tension and charm.

We handpicked our two unknown Sauvignon Blanc clones together (cuttings sourced from the Pyrenees, Victoria but originally from Bordeaux) on the 24th of February.

After whole bunch pressing the juice was allowed to settle overnight. Racking taking all the solids and leaving only vineyard stones in the tank we put 30% into new French puncheons and the rest into a stainless steel tank. All vessels had full solids included and all underwent indigenous fermentation over 10-15 days at 16-20 degrees celcius. The barrel portion of the wine spent 3 months in new oak before transferring to stainless steel. As a blend in tank, the wine spent a further 6 months on full lees to build texture via yeast autolysis and to help retain the freshness seen in the grapes at harvest.
    Bottled December 8th 2015.
    291 dozen produced.

    Tasting Notes

Very pale straw green; almost translucent. Fresh and lively aromas of grapefruit rind, nettles, guava and honeysuckle with complexing hints of toast and flint from barrel fermentation. This barrel fermentation and use of solids has enhanced the primary fruit aromas and flavours of passionfruit and grapefruit, supported by some mid-palate creaminess and refreshing chalky acidity. At release the wine is very tightly woven, and will loosen up considerably with extended bottle ageing.
