    About the Range

A pure expression of our site and the season.

    The Season

Higher than average winter rains in 2014 set the tone for a benchmark Yarra Valley vintage in 2015. The defining feature was the mild and dry spring, allowing for excellent conditions for flowering and fruit set. The balanced crop was then allowed to ripen under optimum summer conditions, again mild and dry, but with rain at the right times. In fact the only significant rain was 55mm on Friday February 13th, of course. More than enough to freshen the canopy and settle the dust on our free-draining slopes. Grapes were handpicked without haste, when the fruit flavours were vibrant and expressive and the acids and sugars in balance. Above all the wines show great purity, tension and charm.

Handpicked from our steep F block. This 0.64 Hectares of duplex clay and ironstone with minimal top soil is optimal Shiraz dirt and the block faces north-east over the valley. This wine is 70% whole bunch fermented and spent 20 days on skins. This extended maceration produced silky tannins which give the wine great longevity. After pressing, each batch was racked to French Oak (25% new) and remained in those barrels for extended elevage and bottling in October 2016. 315 dozen produced.

    Tasting Notes

Licorice, slice and fresh plums are followed by red and black fruits which really drive the bouquet of this wine. The palate is both generous and fine, controlled by talc-like tannins woven into a persistent and pleasant blackberry fruit finish. With tremendous poise and finish, the 2015 Medhurst Shiraz will continue to improve over the next 5-8 years. Ideally matched with grass-fed rib-eye over charcoal, roast kipflers and rosemary with fresh beans.
