    2017 Chardonnay

    95 Points - Wine Front

A fine and detailed Chardonnay from a great vintage.

"Is cool and lean, but flavoursome too.I'm thinking nectarine, lime, ginger, cinnamon and a whisper of struck match. Oak is discreet, it has zip and freshness, a flinty feel, and heaps of good crunch and energy on a long finish. A little bit of lemon rind, spice and sweet lemon in the aftertaste. Lovely." About the Range

A pure expression of our site and the season.

    The Season

The 2017 growing season was cool and mild, producing wines with wonderful acidity, flavours and fine boned slinky tannins. Due to such mild conditions and a relatively overcast summer vintage began three weeks later then in 2016 and 2015 on March 5th. The wines show great poise, fruit flavour and energy, another classic Yarra Valley vintage in the making.

On the 6th and 7th of March our grapes were picked from the low yielding middle and top part of our single 2-hectare Chardonnay site. The soil is more shallow, gravelly here and flavours are subtle, powerful and mineral/soil derived. After hand-picking, the grapes were cooled overnight then whole-bunch pressed the following morning. Pristine but very cloudy juice was then transferred with full solids to French oak barriques and puncheons (20% new). Indigenous fermentation in barrel lasted around one month and elevage in barrel 9 months, the wine was blended with full lees and left in tank to integrate for further two months before being bottled with minimal filtration on February 13th, 2018. 296 dozen produced.

    Tasting Notes

Brilliant very pale straw, some luminescent greens. The nose is highly restrained, subtle with hints of grapefruit, ginger spice and lime. The palate is poised, lively and full of purpose, flinty. The earth derived pithiness is wrapped in powerful white peach fruit and framed with zesty, frisky natural acids. Complexing very tight grain oak is in the background and ensures the structure and integrity of the wine is in place for at least 5-7 years in bottle.

Freshly caught King George whiting from Eyre Peninsula, frites and simple green salad.
