    About the Range

A pure expression of our site and the season.

    The Season

Higher than average winter rains in 2014 set the tone for a benchmark Yarra Valley vintage in 2015. The defining feature was the mild and dry spring, allowing for excellent conditions for flowering and fruit set. The balanced crop was then allowed to ripen under optimum summer conditions, again mild and dry, but with rain at the right times. In fact the only significant rain was 55mm on Friday February 13th, of course. More than enough to freshen the canopy and settle the dust on our free-draining slopes. Grapes were handpicked without haste, when the fruit flavours were vibrant and expressive and the acids and sugars in balance. Above all the wines show great purity, tension and charm.

The most balanced, even slope of the single Cabernet block is farmed each year for this site specific wine. Low crops and careful canopy management ensure powerful varietal flavours and more intensity in a medium bodied frame. Three separate batches were destemmed and crushed into small open fermenters where they remained on skins for between 21 and 32 days depending on the batch. This extended maceration produced silky tannins which are essential to the mouthfeel and longevity of the wine. After pressing, each batch was racked to French oak barriques for extended elevage until the final blend was prepared in September 2016. Only 251 dozen produced.

    Tasting Notes

Blackberry and fresh red fruits, hints of cinnamon, clove and subtle floral perfumes drive the nose of this wine. The palate is controlled by fine ad talc-like tannins woven into a persistent and pleasant fruit finish. With tremendous poise and elegance, the 2015 Medhurst Cabernet will continue to improve with careful cellaring for well into the future.

Black fruit, black olive and truffle, discreet cedar oak. Medium bodied, distinctly savoury, with a truffle perfume, bitter dark chocolate, rich tannin, albeit with a firm grain and touch of hardness, and a firm and long finish. Pulse and vigour. Excellent Cabernet, needs a couple more years to soften and settle.
