    About the Range

    Selected vineyard rows, limited releases.

    The Season

A second consecutive La Niña season, with very high rainfall through the growing season, with 740mm recorded at the Medhurst vineyard for September 2011 - April 2012, with 478mm of that total falling during the last four months of 2011. Needless to say, the soil remained saturated for most of the spring, and barely dried out during summer. The heat summation of 1,432 degree days was higher than the average 1,348 degree days due mainly to the warm and dry January & February we experienced, which was welcomed to dry out the soil and temper the vegetative growth in the vineyard.
The harvest outlook was ominous, as during mid-February the 28-day rainfall forecast showed at least a 25% chance of rain for each of the next 28 days. Thankfully the forecast was not entirely correct and we experienced a classic Yarra vintage, with a long and sunny Indian summer allowing our later ripening reds to achieve perfect ripeness in ideal conditions. We harvested our Cabernet on April 3rd at a very low crop of 6 tones per hectare.

The fruit for this wine was destemmed and crushed into one small open fermenter where it remained on skins for 35 days. Fermentation peaked at 31 degrees celcius and was complete after 15 days. The 20 day extended maceration produced silky tannins, essential for the longevity of the wine. After pressing, the wine was racked to French oak barriques, one new and one two-year old. The wine remained in those barriques for extended elevage until the blend was prepared in June 2013, before bottling in August 2013. Only 45 dozen bottles of this wine have been created.

    Tasting Notes

Although from a warm vintage, the 2012 Medhurst Reserve Cabernet is dominated by fresh and bright cassis and blackberries, a focused mid-palate and fine talc-like tannins throughout. The back of the palate is more of the same: bright fruit and a friendly spicy char from classy barriques. With tremendous poise and elegance, the 2012 Medhurst Reserve Cabernet will continue to improve with careful cellaring for up to 20 years.
