    About the Range

Hand selected parcels of fruit from premium Yarra Valley vineyards.

    The Season

Higher than average winter rains in 2014 set the tone for a benchmark Yarra Valley vintage in 2015. The defining feature was the mild and dry spring, allowing for excellent conditions for flowering and fruit set. The balanced crop was then allowed to ripen under optimum summer conditions, again mild and dry, but with rain at the right times. In fact the only significant rain was 55mm on Friday February 13th, of course. More than enough to freshen the canopy and settle the dust on our free-draining slopes. Grapes were handpicked without haste, when the fruit flavours were vibrant and expressive and the acids and sugars in balance. Above all the wines show great purity, tension and charm.

    Winemaking

The grapes for this inaugural Yarra Valley Chardonnay were in fact entirely from our Estate vineyard! From the lower part of our east/west slope at A block. The soil is deeper here and flavours are more fruit driven and expressive, compared to the more subtle, powerful and mineral/soil derived flavors from mid-slope and above. After hand-picking, the grapes were placed overnight in the coolroom and chilled to 5 degrees. Allowing any oxidative/enzymatic reactions to slow and for the indigenous yeasts on the fruit to start building mass. Grapes were then whole-bunch pressed the following morning and racked as dirty juice to three 500L French oak puncheons within 24 hours of pressing. Indigenous fermentation in barrel lasted around one month. No battonage and no MLF, the wine was bottled with minimal filtration on February 5th.

    Tasting Notes

Bright pale straw with green hues, extremely vibrant and brilliant in the glass. The nose shows hints of grapefruit and stone fruit, both rich and flavoursome yet subtle. No real oak influence, but plenty of mealy, flinty notes. The palate is poised and powerful, showing off a benchmark Yarra Valley vintage and our site. Again oak nowhere to be seen it simply helps usher the beautiful pure fruit to the back of an effortless long and fine palate. This wine will look terrific over the medium term.

A great pairing with freshly caught King George Whiting, crunchy kipflers and good company.
