Medhurst Estate Vineyard Rose 2023 (Magnum Twin Pack)

2023

Medhurst

Estate Vineyard

Rose

Brilliant appearance, pale copper blush and a vibrant pink hue. Cooler vintage wild strawberries, grapefruit and blossom of jasmine nose, with notes of bay leaf in the background. The palate is fine and textured, again cassis and hints of passionfruit. The long chalky delicate line of the wine is trademark of this single vineyard Rose.

The Season
The 2022 growing season was the third cool season in a row. Unlike the even and good sized crop of 2021, the season produced some low yields, though once again we are seeing the highest of quality ! October and November rains were heavy and right at the time of flowering for the earlier ripening varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Along with tiny and light bunches, the resultant crop was 50% and 30% down respectively. The wines do have wonderful flavours, are powerful and balanced and will be ones to buy up on. All other varieties had strong yields and equally impressive quality. A stunning year for Cabernet Sauvignon with a long ‘Indian Summer’ allowing for picking to take place with fine soft ripe tannins and low alcohols.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant appearance, pale copper blush and a vibrant pink hue. Cooler white flower and blossom of jasmine nose, with subtle cassis and strawberry notes. The palate is beautiful with red fruits that skip along and a supple creamy texture. The finish to the wine is superb, fresh fruits, lovely roundness and weight and a long chalky delicate line that is trademark of this single vineyard wine.
Wine Making
This is a deliberate and considered Rosé, which starts from dedicated parts of the vineyard to ensure ripe flavours, fresh fruit and a trademark chalky fine finish. After hand-picking into 450kg bins, the fruit is placed overnight in a coolroom for the stalks to dry up, and the enzymatic reactions to slow down allowing a more gentle and pure extraction of juice at dawn the following day. Whole-bunch pressed grapes and yields less than 600 litres per tonne ensure delicate, pale and highly flavoured juice. Final blend was 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Shiraz. Fermented in stainless steel at moderate temperatures (up to 20 degrees) to enhance mouthfeel. Fruit driven, slippery, balanced and made with minimal intervention.
